Former Faculty Collection: Prof. Emeritus P. Venugopal

Personal Information

Retd. Professor Emeritus P. Venugopal born on 20th May, 1944 is a graduate in Mech. Engg from Madras University with First Class , obtained his M.S and Ph. D from I.I.T Madras. After two years of Industrial Employment, Prof. P. Venugopal has been working in the area of Metal Forming from 1968 to 2014.


He has been associated with the Metal Forming Laboratory (now renamed Materials Forming Laboratory) in the Department of Metallurgical & Materials Engineering at IIT Madras since 1968.

(Since the inception of the Laboratory).


He is an acknowledged expert on the analysis of presses and hammers, machine selection, and metal

forming tool design. He has published his research extensively in various metal forming and materials

science journals. He has guided respectable M.S., M. Tech, and Ph. D students specializing in the area

of metal forming.


He is the recipient of several awards, like the FIE “FRI” Foundation National Special Achievement

Award for Engineering and Technology from Prime Minister Designate (India), besides many best paper awards. He has been Visiting Professor at Universities in Germany, Malaysia, Singapore and

Thailand. He has published more than 102 research papers on various aspects of metal forming

technology. He was invited to serve as the Member of the Advisory Board of Annual Event of Asia-

Pacific Conference of J. Mechanical Working Technology, Elsevier Sc. Publ. Netherlands for 12 years

representing Asia. Prof. Venugopal retired on 2006 and was invited by IIT Madras as Institute Professor Emeritus to join on 2007. This is the notable reward / award from IIT Madras. He re-retired on May, 2014. He is a Honorary Technical Director of a Cold Extrusion Company at Chennai and Retainer Consultant to two more reputed Metal Forming Companies.


He has written monographs on Math of Metal Forming Processes, Metal Forming Processes, Press

Tools For Metal Forming (3 Volumes), Metal Forming Machineries (3 volumes), Experimentation on

Metal Forming (covering 45 experiments) from year 2004 till July, 2007.


Has handled several Sponsored Projects. To cite a few, .D.S.T, A.I.C.T.E, Segments of Indo-German

Projects.
