The IIT Madras Archives serves as the institutional memory of the Institute, housing a wealth of historical documents, photographs, administrative records, negatives and multimedia that span more than six decades of academic excellence and technological innovation.
The Archive of IIT Madras project was established in the year 2019, marking a significant milestone during the institution's 60th anniversary celebrations. Since its inception, the Archive has undergone a remarkable journey of growth and development. On July 19th, 2024, it reached a pivotal moment as its doors were officially opened to the public. Preserving the archival records of IIT Madras, and making them accessible to researchers and the public, is also important for understanding the broader history of higher education and science and technology in independent India and beyond.
Being an institutional Archive, we collect academic and administrative records of the institute. However, we are also collecting personal papers from individuals who were associated with the institute or is in possession of some records relevant to the institute.
Apart from serving the administrative purposes of the institute, the Archive intends to serve the academic community of the institute as well as around the world. We also aim to create awareness about the history of IIT Madras as well as the field of archives in general to the larger public.
Welcome!
The Archives collects the personal papers of alumni (students, faculty and staff) who have had a significant relationship with IIT Madras and whose records have historical value.
